About the study

The Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor ONcological And Clinical Outcome (MONACO) study is a national and international consortium that constructed a registry based on retrospective data to assess oncological and functional outcomes in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). This rare sarcoma originates from nerve tissue and has an annual incidence of approximately 30 patients in the Netherlands.

Using this large dataset of almost 1000 patients, prediction models will be designed that will be readily available online in an interactive app to aid both physicians and patients in assessing prognosis, choice of therapy, and frequency of follow-up. Additionally, the effect of surgery on functional status and neuropathic pain will be studied to evaluate the role of nerve repair and reconstructions.

This study is a multidisciplinary approach including all involved specialties and a collaboration exists between 11 Dutch hospitals (including the

Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology), the Mayo Clinic en Johns Hopkins Cancer Institute in the United States.
