Following my work for the national Young Physician foundation, I decided in 2021 to make the subject of Safety culture in (plastic) surgery the focus for my PhD. Healthcare works a complex aggregate of ad hoc teams including different healthcare professionals. These teams work 24/7 to provide good patient care, but sometimes things go wrong. In recent years I have conducted a multicenter implementation study on effect of periodic team discussions. This was a collaboration with Johns Hopkins University in the US, Technical University Delft & Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences which provided the design of our tool, a Safety Climate Thermometer. In addition to this, I also study recurrence of pressure ulcers in spinal cord injury patients who previously underwent reconstructive surgery, in collaboration with De Hoogstraat Rehabilitation center.
