Following my work for the national Young Physician foundation, I decided in 2021 to make the subject of Safety culture in surgery the focus of my PhD dissertation. Healthcare works as a complex aggregate of ad hoc teams of different healthcare professionals. These teams work 24/7 to provide good patient care, but sometimes things go wrong. Talking about safety and culture in your team can be very beneficial to improve team functioning and patient safety. In recent years I have designed a new communication tool, the Safety Climate Thermometer, about safety culture – followed by a multicenter implementation study. In addition, I’ve published on interprofessional training, education, nurse empowerment and the experiences of residents. Most of my research uses qualitative research methods like interviews, focus groups and observations.
