As a PhD student my research is focused on neuroma formation. Peripheral nerve injury is a common complication after trauma or surgery, which can lead to neuroma formation. A neuroma is a tumor-like growth of nerve tissue with no goal, resulting in random pain signals to the brain. I will test different surgical and pharmacological treatment options and their effect on neuroma formation (histology) and sensory processing (behavioral experiments) in an animal model. With these efforts we aim to contribute to highly needed innovations in the treatment of neuroma, with the ultimate goal to prevent neuropathic pain after peripheral nerve injury. This project is a collaboration between AxoGen (Florida, USA) and the plastic surgery department of the UMC Utrecht.
